Hunter

Hunter, 8" x 5", Graphite Pencil on Paper

Hunter absolutely loved his stuffed animal “Boots.” I wanted to make sure that the scruffy (ahem – well-loved) fur was very apparent, but didn’t detract from the overall image. In fact, the roughness of the toy provided a nice contrast to the smooth skin of the little boy and soft rippling of his shirt.

The gesture, a child fearsley hugging an object and showing off a happy grin, is not one of the more polite classic poses. However, it is true to the adoring and playful nature of the little boy. To enhance the sense of movement, I allowed the pencil marks in the background to be more apparent. Also, the lighting in this final image is a bit more dramatic than in the original photo. However, the spotlight allowed me to make the toy stand out.
