Little Lioness

“Little Lioness,” 8″ x 5″, Graphite and Colored Pencil on Watercolor Paper

This was a very fun portrait – made all the more amusing because this little girl has a naturally sweet temperament. While children can be notorious models due to their tendency to fidget, they are wonderfully uninhibited with their emotion and facial expressions. Seriously, when was the last time you roared?

The drawing style in this picture was adjusted slightly to reflect the raw emotion of the subject. The hair on the left side of her head was already a bit tussled. In this drawing, the messy strands were exaggerated. Also, the shading in the background is a bit rough. A smooth transition from dark to light would not have complimented her countenance. Although the majority of the drawing is black and white, her eyes had to be in color. They were such an amazing shade of blue and so expressive, it was crucial to maintain that riveting hue.
