“Jack”, 8″ x 10″, Graphite Pencil on Watercolor Paper

Jack is a rag doll cat, known to be a playful fellow always on the move. While this can be entertaining, his constant motion can be frustrating when trying to capture an image of his entire body. Rather than attempt to draw his whole figure, I focused on his upper torso and face. Luckily, Jack has beautiful black fur and expressive eyes, making his visage a fantastic focal point.

Due to the large amount of black, there was a risk that the overall portrait might look flat or cold. The dark fur was developed through many layers of graphite pencil and repeated short strokes with an eraser; which gave it sections of shadow and highlight – creating that “fur” texture. To make the image a bit warmer and add a sense of depth, the last layer over the graphite pencil was a soft grey colored pencil.

In keeping with the upcoming holiday spirit, the commission of “Jack” is actually a present. A bride ordered this portrait of a friend’s cat, in gratitude for being her maid of honor at her wedding. What a marvelous way to say thank you!
