This was a wonderful chance to study the Cocker Spaniel form, play with color and, and experiment with texture. As every dog-lover knows, each breed of dog has its own unique physical form, fur growth pattern, and coloring. The cocker spaniel provides a great opportunity to sketch short fur around the face and back, and much longer fur around the ears and paws. The coloring for this particular dog was a marvelous mix of red and gold hues. I had to be careful to not apply too much color or over-blend, for fear of making the colors murky and losing their vibrancy. Of course, while trying to be true to the physical form, it was important to also capture the moment of serenity; when a dog lies down after a long day and gets lost in its own canine thoughts.
