When you are not sure what to give your daughter for her birthday, give her a puppy that she will love and cherish. If she already has an adorable puppy, then re-give the puppy in the form of a portrait! There have been numerous studies that show how having a pet can help improve your mental and physical health. But what no amount of collected data can truly show, is how emotionally attached we become with our furry friends. And since we can’t always carry our pets with us throughout the day – an animal drawing comes in handy.

“Reginald” is based off of a similar photograph. I kept his slightly ruffled fur and lazy-day attitude. However, the original photo cropped off his upper ear and head; so I exercised some artistic license and created a more complete figure by drawing in the missing parts. Also, the original blanket that Reginald was lying on was smooth with only a few ripples. I added some deep folds and exaggerated shadows to make a more aesthetically pleasing image and help lead the eye repeatedly to the main subject.
