Colored Pencil Portrait – “Match Point”

I decided to give this drawing a winning title because it was such a fantastic commission! The customer insisted that the drawing be large and in color because it’s a birthday present….for a prince….and it might go up in his rather large home. She also requested his name be written along the edge of the drawing, but out of respect for his privacy, I cropped that out of this final image.

The composition is rather dramatic as he is obviously in motion with wind-swept hair. But even in this vivid image, the drawing principles are still the same. I began with a basic sketch and slowly built up layers of color and shadow. The large sections of black are a mix of blues, reds, and browns – the same hues I used in his skin tone. Because the red in his tennis racket are so bright, I made sure the highlights in his shirt and on his wrist band were equally bright, to help balance out the colored pencil drawing.
