Dog Drawing: Labrador Puppy with Daffodils

Head down, butt up, tail wagging and eyes gleaming. It’s the typical pose of a playful puppy!

This Labrador Retriever is ready to let loose and wreak havoc on those unsuspecting daffodils!

The drawing was made with pastels, a break-away from my typical colored pencil portrait. I had fun using the brighter pastel colors to see how the whites had a vibrant glow. Between the lighter coloring, the playful pose of the puppy, this animal drawing has a distinctly happy feel. I balanced the bright whites with dark shadows along the edge of the drawing and beneath the dog. The contrast of the white fur and dark eyes and nose really helps the face stand out as a focal point for this pet portrait.

And for all you color aficionados, let’s take a moment to enjoy how the blue wall and orange daffodils compliment each other – who doesn’t love when colors pop!?
